Guest Post & Giveaway with Author Joan Swan

Have you ever wished you had a special power?  Of course, as kids we all dreamed of fantastical things, but what about now, as adults?
I have been wishing for all sorts of powers lately…
·         the ability to add hours to the day
·         the ability to function on less sleep
·         the ability to teleport to and from work and save 8 hours a week commuting
·         the ability to produce money trees
Well… :)
Those are fun thoughts, no?

But what if you always had to keep that power a secret?  What if there were people watching you, studying you without your permission?  People you had no power to control?  What if those people decided they’d studied you enough and decided to kill you so your secret power didn’t leak and make other people start asking questions?

Maybe it’s not such a fun thought anymore.
In my Phoenix Rising series, my team of heroes didn’t wish for their paranormal powers, but were inflicted with them at a military warehouse fire while performing their routine firefighting duties as hazmat specialists.  But the highly radioactive chemicals housed in the building that exploded shouldn’t have been there and if the general public gets wind of the information, key areas of the Department of Defense’s black ops scientific trials will be exposed.  DARPA has dispatched a team of agents to monitor the team members, tracking both their levels of investigation into the incident and their developing abilities—a kind of impromptu, in vivo experiment.

Only one member of the team, Teague, my hero in FEVER, pushes too hard for answers.  Since the fire and healing from his extremely severe injuries, Teague has the ability to raise his body temperature far beyond the normal level.  He has learned this heat can both hurt and heal, but hasn’t been able to get the power completely under his control.  In FEVER, Teague learns, among other things, how to channel his abilities from his inner strength, how to heal others from the inside out and how to accept the strange powers and use them for good even though they had come from a situation he’d always believed was his worst nightmare.

If You could have any paranormal power, what would you choose and why?

Book Blurb:  Release Date: 2/28
When Dr. Alyssa Foster is taken hostage by a prison inmate, she knows she's in deep trouble. Not just because Teague Creek is desperate for freedom, but because the moment his fingers brush against her skin, Alyssa feels a razor-sharp pang of need...

A man with a life sentence has nothing to lose. At least Teague doesn't, until his escape plan develops a fatal flaw: Alyssa. On the run from both the law and deadly undercover operatives, he can only give her lies, but every heated kiss tells him the fire between them could be just as devastating as the flames that changed him forever...

  1. If I had a power I think I would want the ability to transport myself from place to place. I love to travel and even love the getting there but since I'm a scuba diver lots of the places I go require air travel. Which requires lots of money, which I don't have. Sigh.

    1. Hi L2D! I love to travel too, and I get motion sick + the cost is a huge deterrent - so I'm with you! Great power!

  2. Geez, there are so many cool super powers out there. I think I would want to be empathic. Not just to receive emotions, though. I would want to be able to project or manipulate emotions of others. You could absorb people's pain, or help with irrational fears. That would be a great defensive and offensive weapon of sorts. :) leabarrymire (at) gmail (dot) com

    1. Wow, that's quite generous of you!! Me, I'm only thinking of how I can keep others emotions away -- but I kinda, sorta think I'm sensitive to people's emotions already, so....

  3. I really want to power to manipulate things with a wiggle of my nose like Samantha Stevens. To have my house spotless with just a tweak of my nose - to die for :). Other than that I'd like to be able to influence others to be kind. Imagine how nice this world would be if people were kind to one another.

  4. Growing up in South Florida as a child it was hot. I used to wish I had the power to control the weather. I had to walk everywhere and if it was raining I got wet; if it was 98 degrees I would swear I was going to die from heat exhaustion. So if I could have one super power it would be control of the elements so I was no longer subject to mother nature but rather impervious to the weather & in control.

  5. OMG!! A super power! Mine would be that I was able to encase myself in an invisible space where nothing and no one could penetrate. I could hear whatever I want inside but no phones ringing, no dogs barking, and I wouldn't need to leave unless I wanted to ... just write, read, relax ... my own personal oasis wherever I wanted it to be ... I think the beach. : )
Joan, I'm counting the days. I love debut novels but I do have to say that I've been waiting for FEVER too long now. I'm trying to keep my expectations down so I don't disappoint myself but I suspect that won't happen. Eeeee!

    1. Hi Amy! I know, I get that same nervous feeling that someone will be disappointed. I sure hope not! And I covet that private space/time too!!

  6. Okay I would like the power to transport to different worlds. I always wanted to visit Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar. Where the Heralds all had some special gift. Heck I would love to visit the world me and my two friends are creating.

Less than a week to go, Joan. Wee! No need to enter me for Fever. I already own, read and loved it!!!

  7. Good luck with the book and blog tour. I was going to say telepathy, but it seems such an invasion of privacy. Imagine if someone could read your every thought? So as some other have said, perhaps I'd choose the ability to take away another person's pain.

  8. I think I would like Psychokinesis a.k.a. Telekinesis. The ability to move things with my mind could come in handy expecially if someone was about to fall. Another kool power to have would be the ability to freeze time. Just think of all the things I could get done with extra time and stop a potential mess from happening....lol.

Seems like I have been waiting a lifetime for FEVER to come out. I NEED to get my hands on it....^_^.

  15. I would like the ability to move objects with my mind and at times be able to read my husband's mind. :D
I don't know how I'd feel if it was involuntary and a result of a fire like your hero's situation. What a beginning plot! Looking forward to it.

    Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  18. I have thought about this. (I probably read too many paranormal books...hmmmmm....) Anyway, I would love to be able to help people to be happy and solve their issues. Kind of like Counselor Troi on Star Trek just way cooler! Fever sounds really good. My kind of story!

  20. Congrats on the release!! Looking forward to it.

I would want to teleport. It seems like we spend so much time traveling that even just to and from work would save hours a day that something else could be done.

  21. Hey Joan! I love this post. Teague has an extraordinary ability, but it comes at a price. Unfortunately, if any of us had such abilities, we would all likely suffer at some cost in some form at some time. I fear it would be the nature of the beast. Luckily, we have books in which we can indulge such fantastical ideas. It is nice to dream. And the ability to teleport would be awesomesauce. Or the ability to conjure whatever I needed - or someone else needed. I used to wish I could make money grow on trees when I was a kid. But practically, this is what I would need: You know that scene in Harry Potter? Not sure which movie, but when they got to Ron's house and the dishes are cleaning themselves and such? Yeah! That would be my power. To conjure myself some help with my everyday responsibilities. It would be Sweet!

Please don't enter me. I already have a copy of this fantastic book! Best of luck to everyone else. You will love Teague and Alyssa's story! :)

  22. adding hours on to the day is fine as long as I wouldn't have to work those hours (writes a tired person and it's only Monday). Time travel sounds great, but I'd probably mess up the space time continuum. So, I'd go with teleportation because I hate to fly, but love to visit other places.

  24. I'm not sure if it's a paranormal power or not, but I'd like to be able to clone myself. That way I could go to work and stay at home at the same time. How great would that be? I'd have a clean house, and be able to have dinner ready when everyone got home. I think that would be awesome.

  26. I must not have been reading descriptions of FEVER all the way through because this is the first I realized that Teague's heating up trick when he kidnaps Alyssa is something paranormal. This just adds another cool layer onto this already intriguing story/series. i'm not sure what power I'd want besides the power to make either $$ or my boss do what I want! LOL!
