Blurb

Lauren Layne’s latest novel about the healing power of redemption tells the story of a crush gone wickedly wrong, proving that what you want isn’t always what you need.

Growing up in New York, Michael St. Claire never expected to spend his twenties wearing cowboy boots. But that was before he learned about his real father, a total stranger with a family in Cedar Grove, Texas. Once in the Lone Star State, Michael meets Kristin Bellamy, who is exquisitely refined and everything Michael always thought he wanted in a woman. The only problem is that Kristin is dating Michael’s new half-brother, Devon.

Kristin’s mouthy, curvy sister Chloe has always been in love with Devon Patterson. So when Michael offers to help Chloe break up Devon and Kristin, Chloe agrees to a deal that seems too good to be true. Before long, Chloe finally gets her man, only to make a startling discovery: She no longer wants the guy she had to fight for—she wants the one who stood by her side.

After all he and Chloe have been through, Michael swears he’s damaged goods. Can Chloe convince him that love is worth the risk?

“Your shirt’s untucked in the back.”

I turn, giving a half smile of gratitude to the blonde who’s just followed me out of the unisex restroom at the Cambridge Country Club tennis courts.

She giggles as she runs a hand over her tennis skirt, smoothing it over tanned, toned thighs. “I can’t believe I let you talk me into doing that in a public restroom.”

Yeah. Right. I hadn’t talked Mindy McLaughlin into shit. Everything from the location to the position had been her idea.

But I don’t remind her of this.

If I’ve learned anything in my first month as tennis pro to the rich and richer, it’s that cougars don’t like being reminded that they’re the ones doing the pursuing.

I give her a wink as I finish tucking in my shirt, before scanning the courts to make sure we don’t have any witnesses to the fact that we just spent the first twenty minutes of Mindy’s sixty-minute tennis lesson fucking against the wall of a bathroom stall.

Luckily, it’s the middle of the day and hot as hell. Most people hit the courts in the early morning or not at all.

Mindy follows me to the benches, where we retrieve our rackets. “Should we finish up?” I ask.

She lets out a low laugh, running pink manicured nails down the front of my white polo. “I think we already did that.”

I ignore this, and hold up the tennis ball questioningly.

“It’s hot,” she whines.

It is. Way too fucking hot to play tennis. She still has forty minutes left, but I’m not all that surprised that she wants to bail. We both know she didn’t come down here for the tennis.

It’s just as well. I hate the damn sport. I only work the courts three days a week, and my lesson schedule is packed with women who are probably better at tennis than I am.

I’m passably decent at tennis, because, once upon a time, I was one of the spoiled brats taking lessons, not giving them. I don’t love the sport. I’m not like these other douche bags that work the courts and make a big show of how they could have gone pro if they wanted.

My tennis skills aren’t why I was hired, and I damn well know it. Growing up on the Upper East Side of New York taught me early that women of the idle rich class get bored easily. A boredom they often ease by taking up with men other than their husbands.

Fortunately for me, most of my life I was blissfully unaware that my own mother fell into that category of straying housewives.

Ignorance truly is bliss.

And when ignorance is over?

All hell breaks loose.

Let your hair down, Caroline, they said. It'll be fun, they said.

I know I've closed myself off in a major way in the past year, ever since “the incident” where I messed up my life completely. It's past time I try to live again or just give up completely. But this is quite possibly the craziest thing I've ever done. In a last ditch effort to invigorate myself, I'm standing outside Oren Tenning's bedroom, I just peeled off the sexiest pair of underwear I own, and my hand is already raised to knock. My brother would disown me for doing anything with his best friend, and he'd probably kill Oren. But if I play my cards right, no one will ever know about this. Not even Ten.

Maybe after tonight, I’ll finally get over this stupid, irrational crush I hate having on the biggest jerk I’ve ever met. Or maybe I’ll just end up falling for him even harder. Maybe I’ll discover there’s so much more to my crude, carefree hunk than meets the eye.

 Guest Post:
The Origin of Caroline Gamble (Heroine in A Perfect Ten)

Caroline surprised me almost as much as Ten did. When she was created in To Professor with Love, I didn't think much of her; didn't really know her personality, her likes, dislikes, anything.

After I decided she was going to get her own story, I still didn't know who she was on the inside. My ideas were more plot driven at that point. But then I had to actually start WRITING her and yeah, she needed to become someone, like, soon! So, I kind of just dove in, thinking, "Meh, I'll come up with something...I hope," and I started to type. And wow, I did not expect her to have the personality she did!

At first, I kind of felt a Reese vibe from her, you know, that girl who finds humor in everything. But then she did something I knew Reese would never do. After she gave a bald-faced lie to a group of women to keep them away from Ten, I slapped the label, "DEVIOUS" on her too. And it seemed to fit with her background and family. But even better, it was just the kind of match to give Ten a run for his money!

From there on out, Caroline's personality just exploded.

Here is a bit of the scene that helped me decide what kind of person she was going to be:

I rolled my eyes, deciding I’d had enough.

“I’m sorry.” I lifted my hand to get their attention. “But are you guys talking about...Oren Tenning?”

Four faces turned my way. I’m sure they found me lacking in my comfy blue jeans and V-neck T-shirt. I never dolled myself up. In fact, I purposely dressed down to avoid attention from the opposite sex. I hadn’t really fixed myself up since the school dance last year where Sander had invited me to be his date, way back when he’d still been kind and sweet.

But it turns out, he hadn’t ever planned on taking me to that stupid dance. I’d spent all the money I’d scrimped together and saved over the years to buy the perfect dress so I could look nice at his side, and after two hours of beautifying myself for him, he’d taken me out to the infamous make out spot alone to get lucky in the backseat of his dodge challenger. Not since then had I used clothes, makeup, or perfume to impress anyone.

“We sure are, honey. Do you know Ten?” Perfume girl sniffed and tipped up her face in a haughty kind of way as if she couldn’t believe I was good enough to even associate with him.

“Oh...” I gave her a brief, tight smile. “Barely.” I bet I knew him a hell of a lot better than she did.

I doubt she had any idea that his favorite food was chocolate mints, or that he preferred a bottle of Sunny Delight over coffee every morning to drink with his breakfast. Or that he hated spiders and loved cats. I bet she had no clue that every extra dollar he made at the nightclub where he worked went into a savings account where he someday wanted to build his own dream home...that he’d already designed himself. I bet she would never know what an extremely talented artist he was or what lengths he went to just to help his friends.

The bitch probably didn’t know anything about him at all...except how he felt inside her, which okay, was more than I knew. Damn it.

"But one of my friends...” I went on, lifting my eyebrows so they’d think my friend had all the carnal knowledge of him that I did not. “Is still taking treatments to get over...whatever he gave her.”

The four women gave a collective gasp. "No,” one said, her eyes wide.

“Oh my God. I was with him only two weeks ago.”

“Oh, sweetie,” I said with all the fake sympathy I could muster as I reached out as if to pat her arm. “You really need to go get yourself checked.” And she probably needed to anyway, so I didn’t feel bad about suggesting that at all.

“Yo, Ham. I’m heading out.” He appeared out of nowhere beside me to tap our table and get his roommate’s attention.

I yelped because I hadn’t even noticed him moving toward our table. With a low growl, I scowled at him for startling me...or maybe for leaving now, because that meant he was still planning on meeting Kelly. The ass.

He met my gaze and paused. Reading something—though I’m not sure what—from my face, he leaned close to talk into my ear. “What? You’re not still mad at me for chasing off that little boy, are you?”

I sniffed and lifted my chin. “You’re never going let me date anyone without any kind of interference, are you?”

He watched me a moment longer, his intent expression harboring all his thoughts. Then he leaned in again. “How about this? If you ever find anyone good enough for you, I will step back and let you at him without even a single fuck-off glare in his direction.” Then he leaned even closer. “Problem is, I don’t think anyone will ever be good enough for the likes of you, baby doll.”

When he reached out slowly and caught a tendril of my hair, the achiest look entered his eyes. He studied the piece of hair he was methodically winding around his finger, and the way he watched it was just...I knew that look and recognized it intimately. Every time I saw him, I felt it rising from my own core, wanting, yet helpless to take.

A shudder wracked me. Once upon a time I’d told Zoey that if I knew for certain Oren really, truly liked me—liked me the way I liked him—I wouldn’t let Noel keep us apart. And I’d meant it.

I still meant it.

“Even you?” I asked him.

His eyes flashed at the question. “Especially me.”

AUTHOR BIO:

"From an early age I have always been fascinated by the written word and the mood and atmosphere it creates for a reader; especially those books that affect me and transport me to some far-off place. These are the elements I strive to create in my books. My books in many ways record what most affects me: my feelings and experiences with family, friends, and those I have run into on my life's journey. My hope is that in my books you will find something that touches you, something which will resonate in your soul and remind you that you are strong and can overcome anything, especially if you have the support of loving friends and family." - Ayr Bray

10 Things to Know About Author Ayr Bray

1.      I was born and raised in Washington State and lived there all but two years of the first 35 years of my life. I am the oldest of five siblings. I have been married to my own Mr. Darcy for 16 years and I have two handsome sons.

2.      Three years ago, my husband and I, along with our two kids sold everything we owned and bought an RV. Now we travel and tour the USA from the comforts of our own home. We’ve visited 32 states so far and won’t stop until we see them all. Even if that means getting really big tires to float our RV to Hawaii. Sorry, bad family joke. In all seriousness, I will just fly to Hawaii and go on vacation.

3.      I went to college and obtained a degree in accounting because I thought it was a practical way to raise a family with all of the conveniences and comforts that an accounting job would provide; stable income, insurance, paid vacation and sick leave, retirement, etc… It was everything I expected and then some, but little did I know that ten years in I would walk away from it all to be an author and do #3 above.

4.      I started writing short stories when I was nine years old. My first story was about Prince Charles and Princess Diana. I still have the story hand written, in pencil, from the mid 1980’s.

5.      I wrote my first novel at age 28 when I was on bed rest for the worst 7 months of my life during the pregnancy with my second son. I had read just about every book in sight and complained about one part or another to my husband. He told me, “If you think you can do any better then write your own.” I did, and that’s how I became a JAFF writer. My first book was published in 2009. It sold so well it started me on this crazy journey of self-publishing.

6.      When I am not writing, I like to go on hikes, long walks, and bike rides with my husband and children. I love to sail and spend time at the beach and one day after our continental adventures have concluded we plan to purchase a catamaran and sail the world. I also love to rediscover things I’ve forgotten since elementary school when I home-school my two young sons.

7.      I discovered Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice when I was thirteen years old. Since then, I have read the novel at least twenty times. I also own at least one copy (in some cases two or three) of every movie adaptation. I claim that the 1995 BBC miniseries with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is my favorite movie of all time, but if you pin me down and twist my arm I might confess that I equally like North and South by Jennifer Gaskell starring Richard Armitage.

8.      I have always been known as an overly-talkative outgoing person, but what people don’t know is how wrong the assessment really is. I hate big crowds, I feel self-conscious, and I just cover it all up by over-enthusiastically talking until I’ve convinced my self-conscious side that I really want to be there. But, there is a cost. When I get home I feel like I want to die. I have no energy, every muscle in my body hurts, and don’t go in public again for another month. After that it’s a matter of rinse and repeat. The great thing about traveling is no one knows me and I can hide like a hermit from everyone except my husband and sons most days.

9.      My husband is an amazing artist and graphic designer. He designs all my book covers, marketing and promo materials, and goes into full daddy mode to keep the kids entertained when my muse strikes.

10.  As I’ve mentioned before, I have a family of 4 and we live in 240 square feet. Everything in our home has a place and a purpose and must be in that place in order for me to write without being distracted. Call it OCD if you will, but I can’t write with a messy house. The great thing is my boys are growing up and understand that mom’s writing buys the groceries and if mom’s not writing then soon they are not eating. It works wonders to make them understand they have to keep their things in order. All it takes is a threat of no lunch some day in the near future and the house is clean in ten minutes. The other great thing about 240 sq ft of living space is that it is super easy to clean the place from top to bottom in a very minimal amount of time.

BONUS: I eat a 26.5 oz jar of Nutella, by the spoonful, for every 35,000 words I write. My kids call it “Mommy’s writing food.” That resulted in me consuming approximately 2/3 of a jar while writing Scent of Desire.

My personal belief: Every person needs really, really good books, so writers better get to writing.

Excerpt:

His voice had a rough edge that made her fear he wasn’t taking what she’d said as the apology she’d intended. “Right,” she said. “Sex and love are two different things, and boys can make that distinction more easily than girls. That’s all I’m saying. I get that now.”

“I see. What a great thing to learn.”

Was he being sarcastic? She was so confused. “It was a lesson I needed. And learning it the way I did means I’ll never forget.”

A muscle moved in his cheek.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “Did I say something wrong? I was trying to apologize for…for falling in love with you. Or for holding on to you when I should’ve let go.” None of this was coming out right. She could tell that much, so she stopped trying to explain and opted for the direct approach. “Regardless of anything else, know this―I promise I’ll never single you out like that again or do anything else to make you uncomfortable.”

There. That had to be clear. She smiled up at him, hoping what she’d said would finally meet with his approval. But there was that damn frown again. “What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Nothing. Don’t worry. You nailed it. And so innocently, too.”

She pressed her fingers to her temples. The pain meds had really kicked in. “I admit my thoughts are…somewhat disjointed. What, exactly, did I nail?”

“That you can’t trust a guy,” he replied. “That a guy doesn’t know what love is.”

That sounded a bit harsh. Had she actually said those things? “Maybe not all guys,” she clarified.

“Okay. Only me,” he said and walked out.

“I was trying to apologize!” she called after him.

He shook his head as he turned back. “For ever loving me?”
