Perfect for fans of Julia Quinn,
Eloisa James, and Sabrina Jeffries, Ashlyn Macnamara’s blazing hot novel tells
the story of mismatched newlyweds who discover a simmering connection.
Unlike every other proper young lady, Miss Emma Jennings views marrying well as little more than a means to an end. Such a merger would provide her industrious father with social credibility, and Emma with a chunk of her vast inheritance. Emma’s practical views are shattered, however, when her father ties her to the fabulously handsome ne’er-do-well Rowan Battencliffe, a man she loathes on sight—from the smile that promises all manner of wickedness to the way he ogles her with those striking blue eyes.
Deep in debt, especially to his wine merchant, Rowan figures the sooner he gets his finances in order, the sooner he can go back to doing what he does best: burning through ridiculous sums of cash. Which is why Rowan agrees to marry the merchant’s daughter, a prim and proper woman with delightful curves and an ample dowry. But Emma seems to think it’s her business to reform him! Their marriage is a tinderbox—and it’s just too tempting to resist playing with fire.

Arranged marriages. We don’t see
too many of them anymore, and possibly for good reason. Marrying a complete
stranger is a scary prospect, because you can never know for sure what you’re
going to get.
He may not be at all the man you
were expecting. After all, you were sure Papa was going to set you up with a
titled gentleman. Instead you get his far handsomer brother with the promise of
a title eventually.
But still, that means you have to
learn to live with the brother, who had the gall to show up at your first
meeting halfway to foxed. Oh, he may have his reasons, and you may not be up on
all the possible social graces—despite attending finishing school—but you’re
fairly certain that behavior is not quite acceptable.
Then you learn your intended is
on the brink of financial ruin. Not only that, Papa expects you to turn his
fortunes around. Granted, you’ve always wanted to oversee your own funds, and
Papa has given you quite a bit of leeway when it comes to balancing the
accounts and learning about investments. Not only that, you actually enjoy that
sort of thing, even if you leaned at finishing school that dabbling in trade is
not an acceptable feminine accomplishment.
On top of all that, you’re
expected to get down to another sort of business—producing the next heir to the
earldom. That matter might not seem like such a complete hardship, given your
husband’s looks and easy charm. He might just possibly make you tingle in
places you’d prefer not to think about—at least not overly much.
There’s only one problem. The man
spends far too much time at his club. Perhaps he’s avoiding your lessons with
the account books. So far he’s shown very little aptitude there.
What’s a young bride to do? If
you’re Emma Jennings, the heroine of What
a Lady Requires, you form a plan and put it into action. Said plan may even
include seduction. This is a business proposition, after all.
