Guest Post with Keri Stevens

My books aren’t my babies—my babies are my babies.

But I admit, that as a mother of three sons AND a romance novelist, I raise my boys and draft my heroes to share certain characteristics.  If I do my first job right, someday my boys will share their lives with people who will love, cherish and respect them until the day they die. If I do my second job right, someday my heroes will share their lives with people who will love, cherish and respect them until—and after—I write “The End.”

I want my romance heroes to be good-looking. I know it’s shallow, and I’m willing to let it slide every time an author writes that her hero isn’t “conventionally handsome.” But in my head he’s hotter than sin. Always. I’m okay with tall, dark, and handsome, but honestly I do prefer rangy and ginger. I would allow Kevin McKidd, for example, to do…things to me. Many, many things.

Now, between you and me, there’s not a lot I can do for my boys’ looks. I did what I could way back in 1993 when I married their father and agreed to recombine my DNA with his:

That mullet? Swoon. That mustache? Oh, baby!

Over the last two decades, I’d say Dr. Stevens has held up rather well:

Besides giving them good genes, I try to teach my sons good hygiene. When you’re raising boys, you spend much of your life telling them they need to brush their teeth, take a shower, and that no—they cannot wear the clothes they slept in to school just to save time in the morning.

Frankly, I like a hygienic hero as well. While I’m all for creative sex (believe me—ALL for it!) I have a hard time reading scenes set on beaches. I have had sand in my butt, people. Ain’t nothing sensual about that.

I also don’t care for sex in haunted houses (unless he brings along a cashmere blanket) or sex in the jungle (unless we can establish it’s a leech-free jungle). Or sex after ten-shower-free days of chasing the enemy, because…ew. Nasty. and NOT good nasty.

And while we’re at it…I’m not a big fan of sex in the middle of crisis scenes, either. If you are trapped in a closet hiding from the killer with the axe, don’t be knocking your boots against the closet wall. If your niece is in danger and the hot cop and you are rescuing her from the explosive-filled warehouse, please don’t take a break in the search for an explosive quickie.

Work before play, people…which is exactly what I tell my sons!

My motherhood mission statement is that I raise men, not children. If I do my job right, the Stevens boys will be able to feed, clothes and house themselves and anyone they bring into their families in comfort, while performing meaningful work that feeds their souls and contributes to the world.  And my romance heroes better darn well do the same. Even the billionaire princes who don’t need to work a day in their lives should be running massive charities to provide clean water in impoverished countries. The men in my books need to be powerful in the bedroom and out.

But…one of the reasons I love romance novels is that they are at their core, feminist fiction.

Yup. Feminist. In the books I read and write (and I tend towards a hetero hero/heroine story although I’m interested in how power dynamics play in m/m and LGBQT fiction), the heroine always achieves a balance of power with the hero. Cinderella gets her prince—and becomes a princess on his power level. Sleeping Beauty wakes up - and takes control of how her life will be run. And those Alpha males who can be such, well, assholes? They learn to love, respect and admire their women by the end of the book not just because she has the magic hoohah that makes him feel like he’s finally found a home, but also because she is a genuinely worthy person in her own right.

And here is where I as an author completely diverge from the mother. When I write, I put these two characters through the wringer. I set them against each other AND put them in danger. I wound them and have them hurt one another. The sex is hot—and so are the tempers. Characters in romance novels should work their ever-loving asses off (there’s a pun in there, somewhere) to earn their Happy Ever Afters.

But not my boys. I’ve been doing my best since the day I chose their father’s DNA to raise men who ALREADY respect and admire women as worthy individuals. I’m teaching them to recognize and avoid danger (why, just yesterday I made the new household rule that no one can set anything on fire until Mommy comes home!) I teach them the potential problems they’ll face as adults so that they can avoid them whenever possible.

“Don’t be making any secret babies,” I warn my oldest.
“How is that even possible?” he asks.

“Don’t find yourself in a compromising position with a bluestocking!” I tell the middle son.
“I don’t know what any of those words mean,” he says.

“You can’t just hire your discarded mistress to raise your love-child,” I explain to the youngest.
“Where did you put my crayons?” he replies.

Um…yeah. This is working just fine.

What about you? Do the books you love influence the choices and plans you make in the real world? Where do the lines between reality and fiction blur for you?

Thank you Keri for coming by!!

EXCERPT:
This morning, when Meredith had woken, bleary-eyed and her throat dry, she buried her head in the soft pillow. Going home. She probed the thought gently, thinking about opening the townhouse door, sensing the silent whispers. Was it even home anymore?
On their way to the Fairbanks airport, someone yelped, “Look, a bear!”
Even though it was the last day of the tour, the bus still shuddered to a stop when anyone shouted out a sighting. Meredith had rushed with everyone else to the left side of the bus to squint at the distant-moving speck on the rain-drenched green expanse in Denali National Park, all the time thinking, Will he be at the airport? No, of course not. I didn’t even tell him my flight information. But he could ask Ellen. But no, he won’t be there. Unless he wants to talk about the divorce right away...
“Wow, look at those fall colors!”
At a scenic viewpoint, they all huddled together against the whistling wind and stared at the rolling tundra outside of Fairbanks, with its late summer greens, scarlets, and browns pocketed by hundreds of tiny lakes shining a deep navy blue in the weak afternoon sunlight. The stiff breeze carried the scent of trampled evergreens, wet earth, and the suggestion of still, boggy water. The bite of the wind made her eyes water and blurred her vision. She murmured some words of admiration, but her thoughts were far away. What will I do next? How could Michael do this to me after fifteen years?
Meredith had found her fellow travelers to be a contented and congenial group, solicitous and moderately interested in their only single, and rather withdrawn, slightly nervous fellow traveler. They must have found her odd, she realized, her slender frame swaddled in layers of Florida cotton, while they had prepared for this trip for months, fortifying themselves in down parkas and carrying brightly colored backpacks. She was at least two decades younger than most of them. But they had been kind to her, and after the first few days they realized she preferred to be left alone.
It was one of the last tours of the season, and though the sun often offered a bit of pleasant warmth midday, the nights drew in sharp and bitter. On the road to Fairbanks, they had driven through vistas splashed with streaks of red and gold stretching to a far horizon, and could see a fine new layer of snow had already dusted the lower slopes of distant, craggy peaks. The brief Alaska autumn had arrived, and winter already announced its intentions. But Meredith might as well have been traveling in the vast expanse of some flat, monotonous desert, for all the magnificence of the country registered with her.
And now, as she exited the airport and stepped onto the curb, her travel bag held tight under her arm, her lungs breathing in the cool, crisp air, the bus looming ahead of her, the sound of a plane deafeningly roaring, coming closer…
Later, she would wonder if she had seen the plane crash into the waiting bus. She didn’t think so. All she remembered was the noise, the terrible boom, then the fiery mass where the bus should have been.
Screams erupted then, and voices wailing. Meredith couldn’t absorb it at first, that the bus heading back to Anchorage—the bus she should be on—had just exploded at the far end of the airport parking lot.

She dropped hard onto the concrete curb in terror, sprawled into a sitting position with her legs awkwardly splayed in front of her. She watched in confusion as people streamed out of the terminal. The crowd pushed a few feet ahead, shouting and pointing and holding their hands to faces that wore masks of shock and horror, but the heat and flames kept them at a distance.
Oh my God, that’s our bus, everyone is on board, everyone is there...
Jonas and Angela were right behind me. And Carrie and John were across the aisle...
Oh my God. I should be on that bus. I should be dead.
            But I’m not.

Excerpt

“This vein running along the top of your foot is your heart line. You have secrets.”

The ache in her chest throbbed, but she ignored it and said brusquely,“Everyone has secrets.”

He cocked his head and studied her face, not her feet. Although her feet were very happy with the attention his hands were giving them. “Yours are deeper than most. That’s why this vein is so prominent.”

She tried to make her voice light and teasing. “What kind of secrets?”

“Sexual.”

She laughed and relaxed. Everyone had sex secrets.

“You like a little kink.”

She stiffened. “No.” Not anymore. That hadn’t worked out well for her.

“Have you ever tried it?”

“I thought you were reading my feet, not playing twenty questions.”

He chuckled. “So that’s a yes.” He lifted one foot and peered at the bottom. “You don’t like being short.”

She rolled her eyes. “My feet didn’t tell you that. My shoes did.”

His thumb pressed into her arch again, sending her protests skittering. “You have a high arch, which means you like to be in control.”

“Actually, it means I’m missing a joint in the top of my foot. But never mind that. Don’t you like control?”

“Depends on the situation.”He lowered her foot back to his lap and began that bone-melting massage again. He looked thoughtful but didn’t speak for a while, long enough that she relaxed.

“What didn’t you like?”

“Hmm?”

“About the kink?”

She sighed. “The way the guy dumped me after.”

His hands stopped. “He couldn’t handle it?”

“I guess hypothesizing that your girlfriend is a whore is more exciting than the actual experiment required to prove it.” No, that wasn’t right. Dylan had loved the actual experiment. He just hadn’t loved her afterward.

Charlie blinked. Perhaps she should have put it in layman’s terms. Something like,My boyfriend dumped me after I simultaneously fucked him and his roommate.

“Kink doesn’t make you a whore.”

“Depends on the kind of kink.”

“As long as it’s consensual.”

She shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. It’s not like we’re in this for the long term. One hookup. If it’s good, a few more before you leave town. Then we move on.”

He leaned toward her and touched her chin with the tip of his finger. His calluses were rough and warm, comforting. “Whoa. Slow down. Is that what you think this is? A hookup?”

She hadn’t wanted to discuss it, but maybe it was better to get it out there. He’d probably be relieved to know that she had no expectations beyond sex. “Charlie, I’ve had a nice time, but let’s not make this into something more than it is.”

His eyes narrowed as if he was studying her. What was he thinking? Was he deciding if she was worth the effort? Huh. What effort? She was easy. Maybe he was thinking about the fun he could have with the sexual deviant. Two weeks of no-strings-attached sex?

A slow grin spread from his lips and crinkled the corners of his blue eyes. Oh yeah, he was definitely thinking about sex. One finger drifted down the side of her neck, over her breastbone, then veered left to the swell of her breast before circling her nipple and leaving behind a tingling heat. She watched and wondered how long before he got to the good stuff. Not that his hands didn’t feel nice. But she wanted her clothes gone. She wanted his fingers teasing her bared nipples. He had sexy hands. Darker than the rest of him, lean between the prominent knuckles. She liked watching them.

Desire warmed and dampened her panties. She wanted them gone too. Wanted his mouth on her clit, then his cock inside her. She hoped he wasn’t one of those men who liked to draw things out. Waiting wasn’t her strong suit. She didn’t understand women who wanted prolonged foreplay. It didn’t make the orgasm any better. What was the point?

“You’re thinking too much.”

“I’m just waiting—”

“For?”

She almost said “for the good part,” but that didn’t seem like the best idea. She didn’t want to deflate his, uh, interest. On the other hand, if she told him she wanted a slam-bam-thank-you-ma’am, he might be flattered.

As she wrestled with her answer, he said,“Waiting’s good.” He swept her feet from his lap and they landed on the carpet. “Stand up.”

Q& A

A la Twitter style, can you describe your book (or series) in 140 characters or less.

R.C. RYAN- Can Jesse McCord guard his heart against Amy Parish, the only woman he ever loved and lost? Or will danger change the game?

ERIN KERN- Would you give up your inheritance to live in the middle of nowhere? Avery Price did. And ended up getting way more than she bargained for!

KATIE LANE- A small, Texas town filled with sassy heroines, hot cowboys, and zany matchmakers whose hearts are as big as the state they live in.

LAURA DRAKE- A grieving housewife throws her cheating Ex off their ranch.  But when the sweet cowboy she married returns, can they both learn to forgive?

MOLLY CANNON- When Marla Jean's husband dumps her for an older woman, chaos in the form of hunky Jake turns the rest of her life upside down.

LYNETTE AUSTIN- When a cowboy meets an heiress...Somebody Like You—one sexy cowboy and a Harley-riding heiress, each with a secret.

Which of your characters has been the most fun to write so far?
R.C. RYAN- I really can't choose a favorite.  I love them all.  But Jesse and Amy are special.
ERIN KERN- I love all of my characters. Picking just one is like picking a favorite kid. But I’d have to say I loved writing Courtney Devlin (the McDermott brother’s younger sister, and heroine of The Trouble with Trouble). She’s spunky, fiery and tells it like it is. She’s not afraid of backing down from anyone and has a great sense of humor. I always had a great laugh writing her character throughout the books.
KATIE LANE- Kenny Gene. Think Barney Fife in The Andy Griffith Show. Kenny’s not dealing with a full deck, but he has a heart of solid gold and always looks at life like it’s a big package just waiting to be opened.  I just love that about him.
LAURA DRAKE- Probably Katya and Cam, the Heroine and Hero of the last book in my Sweet on a Cowboy series, Sweet on You, due out in August. A Gypsy Army Medic turned PBR Physical Therapist and a beat-up bull rider in his last season on the circuit. Lots of conflict there!
MOLLY CANNON- Hoot and Dooley-the two retired men who sit in the front of Marla Jean’s barber shop, playing Parcheesi and gossiping all day. They’ve managed to get into all 3 books so far.
LYNETTE AUSTIN- Oh, this is hard to answer. I always fall madly in love with my heroes—Cash, Brawley, and Ty are magnificent men and not just because they’re gorgeous. It’s their big, generous hearts that make them unforgettable. I love Annelise Montjoy for the courage she showed in traveling across country to save her grandfather’s life. Sophie London, with her fondness for fairies and her belief in love, really hit home with me. But it might be red-headed, hot-tempered Maggie Sullivan that was most fun to write. She put everything she felt right out there, so I never had to hold back with the emotion.
What’s one book you read in the last 6 months that has left a lasting impression and why?
R.C. RYAN- The Book Thief.  I thought, because it was originally written as a young adult novel, I'd breeze through it and on to the next, but it was heart-wrenching, and I found myself fully immersed in that era.
ERIN KERN- Jill Shalvis has been a huge inspiration of mine for a long time. I love just about everything she does. But when I read At Last, I was more or less blown away. It’s one of the few books that I pre-ordered and then re-read as soon as I finished it. After reading it the second time, I actually re-wrote some of my current manuscript because I was so inspired by Ms. Shalvis’s writing and storytelling abilities.
KATIE LANE- Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. It was the most wonderful, bittersweet romance I’ve ever read. It made me sob like a kindergartener on the first day of school, but it also reminded me how life-changing love can be.
LAURA DRAKE- Coyote Dream, by Jessica Davis Stein. The author uses wonderful characterization of two disparate cultures and ethnicities (NY Jewess and Navajo New Mexican) in a believable, wonderful way. The characters’ journey both inner and outer, are long, arduous, and believable. A wonderful romance!
MOLLY CANNON- BEST KIND OF BROKEN by Chelsea Fine.  This book was funny, heartbreaking, and it was one of those books that stayed with me for days after I finished.  Loved it!
LYNETTE AUSTIN- I couldn’t put down The Collector by Nora Roberts. Not only was the plot intricately and brilliantly woven, but it revolved around Faberge eggs, the Romanovs, and Russian history. I love it when, while reading a great book, I learn along the way.

Great. Now I was a peeping Tom.

“Stop wringing your fingers!” Michelle leaned over and whispered in my ear as we followed the graceful figure down the narrow hall. I looked at my hands, realizing I’d been twisting them
into knots since the cab ride, the long wait in the receiving room, and since my introduction to Ms. Carmen. Ms. Carmen was the hostess, a beautiful fine-boned woman who I surmised must be somewhere in her mid-thirties. She wore an elegant black dress and her hair was sculpted into a dainty twist. I hadn’t known what to expect, but certainly it wasn’t this opulent establishment with its French traditional décor, scattered Louis XV antiques, and fine Rembrandt reproductions.
I realized as I moved down the long hall, with the many adjoining rooms, that each room had its own unique style. Most of the doors were closed, but some rooms were open and I was able
to glance inside. We passed one with a Texan theme, complete with mechanical bull in the center, and I could see plush cow-hide throws piled in one corner of the room. A man lounged in a wooden chair. He was dressed like a cowboy, complete with tengallon hat, denim, and cowboy boots. I couldn’t see who he was talking to, but he had an inviting smile on his face. I sidled a gaze at Michelle, and she returned a wide grin.
“Giddy-up, cowgirl! Ever do it cowgirl on a mechanical bull at full speed?”
I swallowed hard, trying to ignore the glaze of sweat on my palms. It was obvious Michelle was finding great amusement in my unease.
We’d left Eddie in a room drinking and chatting with two other friends who I’d met for the first time that night. I had sort of expected one gregarious party with scantily clad women, and
ripped metal-studded stallions doing wonderfully wicked things to them. I was surprised to not have encountered a single soul except for the occasional glimpses into a room. I’d told Ms.
Carmen that I didn’t want to join a group. I knew I’d be too self conscious, and I couldn’t risk being recognized. Instead I’d opted for a “one-on-one,” as Michelle had explained. Could I really go through with this? Again, I tried not to think too deeply about this very new experience. It was bad enough my knees were wobbling loosely and I could barely manage her steps.
One good thing was my mind was so preoccupied with what was behind those doors that I hadn’t the time to contemplate Josh or my shattering heartbreak. I just felt a lingering numbness
inside, like ice had coated my emotions. I saw a slightly open door and curiosity got the best of me. Lingering behind, I quickly glanced through the opening. Inside the room was a short man
wearing a yellow trench coat, and I chewed my lip, thinking he reminded me of a flasher and was probably buck naked underneath. From the door, I could see a partial profile. He rubbed a hand across his chin, then turned and scanned the room. The light from the chandelier above highlighted his dark hair and boyish features. He swiveled again, but stopped suddenly, and I knew the man had sensed my presence. Turning away, I hustled down the hall, trying to catch up with the other two women. Great. Now I was a peeping Tom.
