Most people know Hollywood heartthrob, Ryan Summer, as Ryan, no last name required. But once upon a time, he was just Summer to Carrie Ann—before a decade of blockbuster hits skyrocketed his success into superstardom.

Summer was smart, gorgeous, and cocky as hell. Nothing was out of his reach. Not even Carrie Ann Lowell. He was the love of her life—until he shattered her heart. Their breakup left more than a profound rift in her soul. It crushed her.

When Carrie Ann’s college flame forces his way back into her life, his dirty-talking, bold self-assurance re-ignites a passion she thought had long since been extinguished. Carrie Ann didn’t believe in second chances.

Not even for him.

No matter how deliciously tempting.

With sparks flying and hidden truths unraveling, will Carrie Anne be able to deny her desires to save herself from another heart break?

Carrie Ann tugged the earbud free from her ear, tossing the handsome young man a small smile. “Sorry, I couldn’t hear you. What did you say?”

He crossed a lanky somewhat defined arm in front of her, casually gripping the handlebar of her bike. “I said, you must be exhausted—” Before she could reply he continued, “—from running through my mind all day.”

Surely she must’ve heard him incorrectly. He was probably fifteen at most sporting a baby face and a patch of ten whiskers on his chin. Her brows tucked into a furrow. “Excuse me?”

A dose of youthful overconfidence drifted over his mouth in a sharp grin. “I seem to have forgotten my number. Can I have yours?”

“My phone number?” Carrie Ann scanned the near vicinity, row after row of workout equipment, for the practical jokester responsible for the madness. “Ha ha. Very funny. Who put you up to this?”

Her amusement only encouraged the boy’s macho bravado. “No one put me up to anything. I need a date. I just got into LA and I’ve got this Red Carpet event—”

“A date?” she scoffed at the ludicrous suggestion. Though she looked young for her age, Carrie Ann was still all of thirty-four years old.

“Yeah, you know. A date. You, me, hundreds of fans screaming as we stroll down the Red Carpet.” His voice cracked emphasizing the words Red Carpet…for the second time. A self-absorbed twinkle gleamed in his brown eyes as if he expected her to melt and drop to her knees right there in the gym.

“Kid, you’re barking up the wrong tree.”

“I’m totally serious. My uncle has this movie premier and I can’t just bring anyone.” A chunk of blond hair fell on his forehead and he flipped his head to the side. My date needs to be…hot, and well, you’re the hottest girl I’ve seen since I got to LA.”

She sneered at the absurdity. Silliness turned to annoyance. Carrie Ann switched gyms a few months back, paying out the nose to invest in her fitness and more importantly her privacy. Her last gym was more crowded than a cattle call casting session.

Carrie Ann rolled her eyes. She moved around him, gathering her workout towel and reaching for her bag. “Look kid, you seem real sweet, but—“

“You’re right about one thing.” A familiar voice, deep and perfectly modulated, approached from behind. “She is the most beautiful woman you’ll ever lay eyes on. But, you’re reaching for the stars with this one, Drew. She’s a heartbreaker.”

An ice cold tickle ascended up her spine raising the hair on the back of her neck. Her head snapped, glancing over her shoulder, colliding with a pair of rich amber eyes from her past. Without breaking eye contact, Ryan Summer strolled right into her personal space sporting athletic shorts, a fitted muscle shirt and a killer smile.

Nowadays, most people knew the Hollywood heartthrob as Ryan. Just Ryan. No last name needed. But after nearly a decade of blockbuster hits and infamous relationships that skyrocketed his success into superstardom, to Carrie Ann, he was still just Summer. Her old college flame.

“Funny, I could say the same about you,” she countered his jab, marshalling a bit of annoyance in her tone to combat the rush of heat spreading to her already pink cheeks.

A sexy smile caught the curve of his wide firm mouth. “Hello, Red.”

“Hello, Summer.” Carrie Ann tossed a trivial nod toward the teenager. “Who’s this? Your new apprentice?”

“Apprentice?” Moving a step closer, he dragged his fingers through the short cropped layers of sandy blond hair. “This is Mark’s boy. Do you remember my nephew, Drew?”

“Your brother’s boy?” she questioned in surprise. Avoiding the view of his bicep curling into the size of a softball, Carrie Ann ran a quick scan over the young man at his side. “Whoa, you had to be four or five years old the last time I saw you.”

“I don’t remember meeting you.” Drew’s eyes flickered with bemusement and optimism.

She extended her hand. “I’m Carrie Ann. I knew you when you were—“

“You’re Carrie Ann? The Carrie Ann?” The boy spun toward his uncle, his blue eyes broadened in disbelief. “The One?”

Her stomach twisted hearing the title. A flash of perspiration instantaneously flooded her palms. Before she had time to renege on the clammy greeting, Drew clasped her hand, giving it a polite shake.

A low rumble of laughter simmered in Summer’s chest and a rosy shade of red burnished high on the bridge of his nose. He nodded, “This is The Carrie Ann. The One who got away.”

No matter how many years had passed, it never got any easier to see him. Each time she did, she suddenly found it harder to breath.

The pounding of her heart quickened as her gaze slipped over his rugged well-defined features. A three day scruff accentuated the slight dimple at the bottom of his chin.  The disheveled layers of hair were wet from exertion near his temple and nape. Time had been very good to him.

She felt the warmth of his hand close around the back of her bare arm. The early morning stubble of his beard brushed against her cheek as he leaned closer pressing a small kiss near her temple. Carrie Ann squirmed at his nearness, ducking to the side attempting to put some space between them.

“I’m…I’m all sweaty,” she insisted breathily.

“It’s okay,” he murmured softly in her ear. The heat of his breath brought chill bumps to the damp skin near her neck. “I remember enjoying you all sweaty.”

Ryan’s golden eyes locked onto hers, anchoring her feet to the floor. The penetration of his stare momentarily tied her tongue in a knot, turning the awkward moment even more difficult. Carrie Ann hadn’t bumped into Ryan in at least three years and she hadn’t seen him covered in sweat in ten. An image of him, gloriously naked, flashed in her mind and her thighs. Frustration mounted as her body willingly betrayed her.

Carrie Ann’s jaw set rigid contemplating the idea of flipping off her hooha for its insubordination.

“That was a long time ago,” she snipped abruptly.

“Seems like only yesterday to me.”

 Excerpt:

I was so tired of being afraid . . . and weak. When would it end?

My head jerked up when I heard someone approach.

The doorknob twisted and Killian stepped in. He paused, his smile fading and his brows drawing tight. He shut the door behind him as I hurried to rustle through my notes in an attempt to look busy.

He placed his large palms against the desk. “What’s wrong?”

I sat and reached for a pen, keeping my gaze averted. “It’s loud out there,” I managed.

He glanced back behind him, although the door remained shut. Shadows of concern

darkened his features when he returned his face to mine. He didn’t believe me. Why would he? It didn’t take a genius to see I was scared.

My grip tightened on the pen. “Maybe I should work from home. If we talk some now, I can get most of the work done at my mother’s house.”

“What happened?”

Killian’s harsh tone had me meeting his stare. For the most part, Killian was pretty laid- back, but rage lingered just beneath the surface. It was why he was almost undefeated in his weight class. He knew when to release it.

Fury stirred behind his deep blue irises. I knew it wouldn’t take a lot for him to open the lock that caged his anger. If he suspected that anyone had mistreated me there would be serious trouble, with me coming out badly in the end. “I don’t think I should be here,” I told him truthfully, hating my voice for how it shook.

Killian stiffened. “Sofia . . .”

“It was a mistake,” I blurted. “I’m not ready.”

Killian’s focus narrowed in on my face. He was trying to figure out my sudden change. Knowing so scared me senseless.

I stood then sat and stood again. My words made no sense, but they were the only ones I could form then. Fear paralyzed me constantly, making it hard to function. That was the reason I’d turned to computers to begin with and become so adept. It was just me and a machine incapable of judging or hurting me. If a task or function didn’t work, I started over until I got it right. I never had to worry what could happen to me when I sat in front of the keyboard. Never had to fear who could reach out and grab me. Never had to be afraid it would spill my darkest secrets. I could escape into my work, knowing I couldn’t be harmed.

Life didn’t have that luxury.

“I shouldn’t have come across so strong,” Killian said.

I straightened, my lips parting slightly. “What?”

He bowed his head, releasing a heavy breath. “When I invited you to come here, and you agreed, I thought maybe you were agreeing to more—I shouldn’t have assumed that. I’m sorry.” My grip loosened on my pen until it fell from my grasp and onto the desk. Oh, no. Please don’t.

“I should know better than to push. I just thought, it won’t happen again,” he added

quickly. “I swear it won’t. But please don’t leave. I meant it when I said that I needed you.”

He did want more. And now I’d ruined things.

I rubbed my eyes, frustrated.

When Killian first took over the gym last fall, his expenses were huge and his profit

minimal. I’d built him the most basic site to attract business and helped him with promo. Philly took care of its own. When word got out that he was a local boy—with five years of professional MMA matches under his belt and taking on trainees—business exploded and so did the chaos. He needed a better site, a better bookkeeping program, and better organization.

“I need you, Sofia,” he repeated. “I can’t trust anyone else with my accounts and personal information. Will you stay and help me?”

He needed me. I dropped my hands away and lifted my chin. “Okay.”

“Yeah?” Considering I’d changed my mind twice in the span of an hour, I couldn’t really blame him for doubting me or my sanity.

“Yes, I’ll help you,” I promised. I rustled through the papers on the desk again, trying to offer more of an explanation. But there I was again, unable to make sense out of what was right in front of me.

I could feel Killian’s gaze on me. Originally, I wasn’t supposed to start until the end of July. But when he called me a few days ago and gave me the lowdown, I knew he couldn’t wait.

He continued to watch me in silence. I finally stopped and lifted my chin. “I’m sorry, Killian. I don’t want to be so . . .” “Pathetic” was the first word that came to mind. But

thankfully I didn’t say it out loud.

“You don’t need to be sorry about anything.”

But he was wrong.

I motioned to the door, unable to keep my eyes on his. “The thing is I need some privacy. It’s hard to focus with the noise.”

Killian leaned back and crossed his bulging arms, exposing the religious tats painting them. There was something unnerving about the Archangel Michael staring straight at me. Then again, he knew my sins well.

“The doors need to stay open, and so do the blinds,” Killian said.

A group of male voices laughed some distance away. Was it those same guys? I motioned toward the door again, my hand starting to shake. “I-I can’t concentrate. It wasn’t this loud last time.”

I wasn’t sure what Killian caught in my expression, but whatever it was deepened his voice. “I’ll buy you some plugs.”

“It won’t be enough,” I added quietly.

He watched me for a beat. Man, it was as if he could see straight into my thoughts. “Listen, Sofia, most of my guys training are decent. But some aren’t. I want to make sure you’re safe. I can’t do that if I can’t see you.”

“What if I lock—”

“No.” His tone was firm. “I need to know you’re safe at all times.”

Mayor Trent July and his wife Lily are enjoying life as newlyweds and embracing the challenges and joys that come with being adoptive parents to two wonderful boys. Excerpt

It was the first week of December. Four inches of snow had fallen overnight and according to the dashboard gauge on Trent’s truck, the temperature outside was a balmy fifteen degrees. Driving down Henry Adams’ main street to the Dog, not even the winter weather kept him from marveling at the changes to the landscape brought about by the largesse of town owner, Bernadine Brown. The open stretches of land that were once strewn with the crumbling remains of Henry Adams’ 19th century past now held a new recreation center, school and church. The old dirt roads were paved. Asphalt parking lots had been added along with cement sidewalks and towering solar street lights. Other improvements were in the planning stages and he couldn’t be more pleased by the towns rebirth. His family had been residents since the 19th century and over the years had seen it rise to become a model for African American communities nationwide, but by the 21st century due, it fell so low, he as mayor was forced to offer it for sale on eBay. That’s when Bernadine Brown, armed with a multi-million dollar divorce settlement, rode to the rescue like a one woman battalion of the famed Tenth Cavalry. She’d even footed the bill for re-habbing the Dog, turning what was once a well-loved but dilapidated eyesore into a glistening eatery complete with brand new red leather booths, smooth topped tables, a state of the art kitchen, and wi-fi.

Inside, old school music played on the fancy red jukebox, as always. The mounted flat screens TVs were tuned to the day’s football games, and the interior was filled with the familiar faces of those he’d grown up with: Rochelle “Rocky” Dancer, the diner’s manager and Henry Adams’ resident bombshell; Clay Dobbs, his god father and his dad’s best friend, and Bing Shepard the crusty old WW2 vet, now living with Clay after the death of his wife. Both men played a significant role in Trent’s life growing up.

His dad, Malachi walked over to greet them. “Well if it isn’t my favorite son and grandsons.”

“We’re your only son and grandsons,” Trent countered, which made the boys grin. Father and son ribbed each other constantly, a testament to their strong bond.

“You over educated engineers always have to point out the obvious,” Mal groused. “Go on and get a seat. Your booth in the back’s waiting on you.”

After pausing a few times to speak to friends, Trent and his sons took seats in their favorite booth. Crystal Chambers Brown, Bernadine’s seventeen year old daughter and the resident big sister of the town’s kids came over to take their order. “Hey, guys. Your usual burgers and fries?”

“Yes, ma’am,” Trent told her. While she wrote down the order he asked, “When are your friends coming from Dallas?”

“Tomorrow morning. Mom’s going to let me miss school so I can ride with her to the airport. I’m so excited.”

“I’m looking forward to meeting them. Hope they’ll like living here.”

“What’s not to like?” she asked. “We live in the middle of nowhere – no fast food – no clubs, no real music on the radio. It’s paradise.” She left them to go and put their orders in.

Trent looked to Amari. “Was she being sarcastic?”

The boy shrugged. “Who knows? With her it’s hard to tell but I do know that after running away and having to come back to paradise after only a few days with her tail between her legs, she figured out Dorothy got it right: There’s no place like home.”

Trent concurred. After earning his Master’s degree in Engineering from Stanford, he’d taken a job with a multi-national architectural firm in LA and for ten years immersed himself in big city living. Eventually, wearied by the break neck pace, the sometimes cut throat nature of the people, and two failed marriages, he’d returned, never to leave again.  He glanced Devon’s way and saw him staring across the room at his former best friend Zoey sitting with her dad, town pediatrician Reginald Garland and eleven year old Wyatt Dahl. Wyatt and his grandmother Gemma were the town’s newest residents and he and Zoey had become inseparable in the short time since the Dahl’s arrival. Everyone in town was well aware of Devon’s long running feud with Miss Miami as Zoey was affectionately called, and although Devon wouldn’t admit it, Trent knew he missed calling her friend. “You want to go over and say hi to Zoey and Wyatt?”

“No,” Devon replied as if Trent had just asked him to drink motor oil.

Amari shook his head but kept his opinion on the matter to himself.

Trent didn’t press, but the irritation in Devon’s eye was mixed with unspoken longing and a deep sadness. Later in the week, they’d be meeting as a family with Reverend Paula. He hoped the rift with Zoey would be one of the subjects on the agenda.

A short while later, Crystal returned with their meals. Devon said grace and hey dug in.
