A Look Behind the Scenes of BEDROOM EYES and PERFECT
MATCH

Readers often ask, “Where do you get your ideas from?”
Sometimes I have a hard time answering that question because so many ideas bounce
around in my head, I usually snatch the first one that settles into my palm and
start writing. (No, I’m not one for plotting!)
When I set out to pen BEDROOM
EYES, I had lived in New Orleans four years. Four years is no time at all
to learn the myriad secrets and traditions of this centuries-old city. For me, that meant my heroine had to be from
somewhere else. As a newbie come to the city, the heroine Penelope Sue Fields
would be learning about her new home and as she explored, so could the reader. As
a recent transplant, I could draw on my experiences to create Penelope .
For example, New Orleanians asked me why I walked so
fast. It’s way too hot in July to rush
anywhere. But in California, I rushed everywhere, all the time. When Penelope,
overdressed and overcome by the summer heat, starts to faint, it’s the perfect
opportunity for the hero undercover cop Tony Olano to catch her before she
cracks her head on the sidewalk.
When I wrote BEDROOM
EYES, “cute paranormal” stories were very popular. I love make-believe and
I love happy endings. I don’t do tense and blood-curdling. Ask my husband, who
knows I’ll leave the room if he’s watching a serial killer or bloody samurai
movie. BEDROOM EYES features “ candle magick” as practiced by a quixotic
grandmother whose inability to perfect her spells leads to all sorts of
complications, but also lights Penelope’s path to true love.
PERFECT MATCH is
my third New Orleans-set novel. (PILLOW
TALK came out in between). Cute
paranormal wasn’t in vogue any more (ah, the cycles of publishing!) yet I was
writing the sequel to BEDROOM EYES.
Somehow I had to create a story featuring Alistair Gotho, a master candle
magick practitioner who no longer practiced his craft. Ookay…
Like many writers, I had a day job. Mine was one I loved, at
Tulane University. One of the aspects of
my position involved working with students with learning differences (much
better than the term disability). A
frequent challenge for students was coping with and managing attention deficit
and hyperactivity. I drew on a range of behaviors when I created Lauren
Stevens, a post-doctoral student who can’t sit still long enough to write her
dissertation. When we meet Lauren in PERFECT
MATCH, she’s scraping by as a street performer in the French Quarter, along
with Buster, a rescue parrot.
My wish for readers is that Lauren and Alistair’s story of
triumph over adversity not only entertains, but offers inspiration and
hope.
Author Info
Hailey North is a USA Today bestselling author who began
writing while employed as a “game show lawyer” for NBC Studios. Tired of
hearing lawyers weren’t creative, she quit her job and typed “Chapter One” (not
the chapter, just the heading!). Since that day, North has penned eight
romantic comedies set in her adopted hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana, and in
her favorite imaginary town, Doolittle, Arkansas.
She has also created a three-book “afterlife” series that
celebrates creative, but accidentally dead, characters trying their darnedest
to win a second chance at life. North lives in Louisiana with her husband, her
food-centric Labrador Shelby and her two kindred-spirit felines, Ali Kat and
Rosa Pax.
